From Today's Oakville Call - MCTA in the News!

Group opposed to Prop C sets kickoff rally
October 06, 2010 -A newly formed group opposing the Mehlville School District's Proposition C will sponsor a kickoff rally at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, at the Holiday Inn South County Center, 6921 S. Lindbergh Blvd.

The Mehlville Community Taxpayers Association, a grass-roots, nonpartisan citizens' group, is sponsoring the forum.

The MCTA is opposed to the proposed 88-cent tax-rate increase voters will consider Nov. 2, citing what it contends is the Board of Education's lack of credibility and the community's inability to afford Prop C, which district officials estimate will generate $15.4 million in new revenue annually.

MCTA members recently told the Call they established their organization because of a growing sense of dissatisfaction with the representation being provided by Board of Education members and their belief the board is out of touch with the community.

  2. I can only hope that we can put a stop to the school boards rubber stamping of administrators pay in the Mehlville School District. Start with a 25% roll back of salaries for all employee's vice principals and up...this would be a good start. Public sector pay for administrators has become a huge problem throughout the country, the economics just do not work...Unions and the school board have to be controlled. I am tired of seeing 100k salaries for principals. All over the country teacher unions are coming under scrutiny...just look what is happening in New Jersey.

  3. Based on what I have read from your group, many of you seem to be basing your Prop C opposition on your displeasure with the Board of Education. If that is true, doesn't it make more sense to vote them out of office at your next opportunity rather than take much needed money from the children in the District? We can debate all day about whether or not money is "wasted," however it is hard to overlook the hard fact that Mehlville spends less per pupil than all but 1 of the 23 districts in our area. Voting no on Prop C will not remove anyone from the Board of Education.

  4. The Mehlville schools have already wasted enough of my money, thank you. The reason that Mehlville spends less per pupil is that the board and administration is too busy giving out raises to employees and not allocating proper resources to the students. This district is run by the unions for the unions. My kids attend Lutheran schools and it costs us a mint. We should not have to pay taxes to support a failing public school system like Mehlville while we send our kids to a real school. We deserve a break and we will vote no on Proposition C.

  5. Anonymous 10-11-10; Here is a hard fact. Pattonville school district spends $13,328/student. So guess what the average composite ACT score is at Pattonville? 22.1. Maplewood Richmond Heights spends $14,206/student. Average ACT composite score? 19.9. Hancock spends $9,455/student. Avg. ACT composite score 19.9. Lindbergh spends $9,777/student. Avg. ACT composite score 23.7. Mehlville's avg. ACT composite score? 22. So enough with what is spent per student. Remember it is not quantity but quality that counts.
