Restore the Pride Committee Raises 20 Times as Much Money as MCTA

November 03, 2010 - The Committee to Restore the Pride, the organization advocating the passage of the Mehlville School District's Proposition C, had raised nearly 20 times as much money as the group opposing the 88-cent tax-rate increase heading into Tuesday's election.

Mehlville voters considered Prop C Tuesday — after the Call went to press.

The Committee to Restore the Pride reported raising nearly $27,000, while the Mehlville Community Taxpayers Association, the organization opposing Prop C, reported raising nearly $1,400.

The information about both committees was included in campaign finance reports that state law requires to be filed eight days before an election.

Jeff Clobes and Jim Schibig are the co-chairs of the Committee to Restore the Pride. Jack Jordan is the organization's treasurer. Rich Franz, Greg Frigerio and Ken Meyer head the MCTA. Frigerio is the organization's treasurer, and Meyer is assistant treasurer.

The report by the Committee to Restore the Pride — dated Oct. 25 and filed with St. Louis County Oct. 28 — covers Oct. 1 through Oct. 21. During that period, the group raised $26,980 — $23,980 in cash and a $3,000 in-kind contribution — and spent $2,775. The committee reported having $24,205 cash on hand.

Contributors during the period included: Dickinson Hussman Architects, $5,000; Ameritime, a financial consultant for educators, $3,000; IKON Office Solutions, a $3,000 in-kind contribution; Dannix Painting, $2,500; general contractor SM Wilson, $2,500; Associated General Contractors, $500; Inter-State Studio & Publishing Co., $500; Wright Construction, $500; Goodwin Brothers Construction Co., $500; C&R Mechanical Co., $500; KCI Construction Co., $500; and Orf Construction, $350.

Other contributors included: Mehlville Board of Education member Micheal Ocello, $1,500; board President Tom Diehl, $1,000; district Superintendent Terry Noble, $1,000; William G. Cocos Revocable Trust, $750; William J. Cocos of Cocos Plumbing, $500; Jack Jordan, $250; Jack and Lois Jordan, $250; Mehlville Deputy Superintendent Eric Knost, $250; Assistant Superintendent-Curriculum Connie Hurst-Bayless, $250; Shannon Pike, Mehlville Senior High School assistant principal, $250; Assistant Superintendent-Supervision of Schools Brian Lane and his wife, Amber, $200; longtime district administrator Alan Schindler, $200; Director of Accounting Lisa Furey, $150; Chief Financial Officer Noel Knobloch, $150; Director of Facilities Steve Habeck, $125; Mark Catalina, Witzel Alt Academy programs director $125; and Oakville Elementary School Principal Chad Dickemper, $125.

Expenditures during the reporting period included: Call Newspapers, $2,390 for a display ad; CBS, $250 for a Web ad; $83 for an insurance permit and $52 for a two-time facility rental.

The report by the MCTA — dated Oct. 21 and filed with the county Oct. 22 — covers Oct. 1 through Oct. 20. During that period, the group raised $1,387 and spent $1,056.89. The organization reported having $330.11 cash on hand.

Contributors during the period included: Ken Meyer, $305; Fenix Construction Co., $250 and former Mehlville Board of Education member Dick Roehl, $150.

Expenditures during the period included: promotional product firm The Goodson Co., $866.43, and the Holiday Inn South County Center, $190.86.

Meanwhile, reports for the group advocating for passage of Lindbergh Schools' Proposition L show the campaign has received more than $24,000 in contributions.

The Yes for Prop L committee, which supports the 65-cent tax-rate increase that district voters considered Tuesday, has raised a total of $24,506.23 and spent $12,763.75.

Julie Knost and Leslie Weiss are the co-chairs of Yes for Prop L. Karen Schuster is the organization's treasurer.

The Yes for Prop L committee's eight-day pre-election report — dated Oct. 15 and filed with the county Oct. 26 — covers Oct. 1 through Oct. 21. During that period, the group raised $14,378 and spent $12,480.34. The group reported having $11,742.48 cash on hand.

Contributions during the period included: National Education Association, $4,940; Vantage Credit Union, $2,500; Crestwood Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization, $1,000; Truman Elementary School Parent-Teacher Group, $1,000; Kennerly School Parent-Teacher Partnership, $501; Lindbergh High School Mothers Club, $500; Lindbergh Board of Education Treasurer Mark Rudoff and his wife, Melinda, $500; Travis and Lisa Arends, $250; John E. Martin of JRC Medical, $200; Assistant Superintendent for Personnel Services Rick Francis and his wife, Christine, $200; the Program for Exceptionally Gifted Students, or PEGS, Parent Group, $140; and Mark and Debra Hazlewood, $125.

Expenditures during the period included: Sign-a-Rama, $3,624.76 for yard signs and Postcard Deals Inc., $8,805.58 for postcard printing and postage.

The Yes for Prop L committee also filed a quarterly report. The report — dated Oct. 15 and submitted to the county Oct. 18 — covers Aug. 1 through Sept. 30. During that period, the committee raised $10,127.80 and spent $283.41.

Contributors during the period included: Lindbergh High School Bandstanders, $2,078.80; Sappington Parent-Teacher Group, $1,000; Lindbergh High School Alumni Association, $1,000; Long Parent-Teacher Group, $1,000; Lindbergh String Orchestra Development Association, $1,000; and the Lindbergh School District Foundation, $1,000.

Other contributors included: Pharmax Pharmacy, $500; Lindbergh Superintendent Jim Simpson and his wife, Carol Ann, $500; Kennerly School Parent-Teacher Partnership, $499; Lindbergh High School Mothers Club, $200; Lindbergh High School Principal Ron Helms and his wife, Karen, $200; Lindbergh CFO Pat Lanane and his wife, Nancy, $200; Lance and Leslie Weiss, $150; and Mark and Debra Hazlewood, $125.

Expenditures during the period included $283.41 to the district for printing and copy charges.

  1. 'Restore The Pride' is a misnomer, and quite frankly bullshit! The pride never went away! Nice use of a Joseph Gerbals style tactic! I personally am offended at the mere suggestion that Mehlville lacked pride!

  2. After reviewing the contributions to each Prop it looks like Lindbergh has way more pride than Mehlville. The PTO of each elementary school, Mothers Club. Heck, even the Lindbergh Alumni Assoc. and the String Orchestra DA kicked in a $1000. each. Now there is some Pride!

    There is no pride in the form of an Architectural firm, or Construction company as they are out for one thing and one thing only.

    Lindbergh will always be Linbergh.
